Where can I go for assistance with using the Exelis VIS Web Licensing Portal?

Please refer to our Web Licensing Help for assistance with activating or modifying your license online.

Where can I find my Host Name and Host ID?

The Host Name and Host ID (also referred to as the Server Name and Server ID for server based licenses) is required for license activation.  Please refer to Help Article 5321 for assistance with obtaining this information.

How do I access the IDL Virtual Machine?

The IDL Virtual Machine can be downloaded after logging into the My Account section of the Exelis VIS website, under "Downloads".  It is not a separate download, and can be obtained by downloading the full IDL package.  For assistance with this process, please see Help Article 12395.

If you are encountering troubles running the .sav file you have received, you will want to contact the supplier of the application.

I am receiving a license error when trying to open the IDL Virtual Machine, though I've heard it is a free application, why is this?

The IDL Virtual Machine is free to download and use, and does not require a license to run.  If you are attempting to run a '.sav' file application using the IDL Virtual Machine and you receive a licensing error message or are entered into Demonstration Mode, it is likely that you have inadvertently opened the full development version of IDL.  For more information about executing '.sav' file applications using the IDL Virtual Machine, please refer to Help Article 4633.

I purchased an Exelis software product for my personal computer. How do I license the product?

Basic license instructions can be found below, including how to activate your license using the internet, as well as what information is required to build a license if contacting Exelis VIS Technical Support.  For more detailed instructions (including how to install licenses on particular platform and license type configurations), please see Help Article 4660.

How to Start the License Wizard:

    • Windows: Click Start > Programs > IDL, ENVI or ENVI LiDAR menu item > Tools > License Wizard
    • Mac: Using the Finder, browse to /Applications/exelis/idl84/LicenseWizard.app
    • Unix/Linux: Using X11 change directories to /usr/local/exelis/idl84/bin/ and run "exelislicense".

How to Activate Your License Using the Internet:

    • Select "Activate a license using the internet"
    • Login to the Exelis Website (www.exelisvis.com)
    • Select your license number from the list
    • Click Activate (This will build and activate your new license)
    • Click Next in the License Wizard, then finish.

How to Activate Your License if You Don’t Have Internet Access:

    • Select "Request a license if you don’t have internet access"
    • This opens a new window with the necessary information, then provide that information to the Exelis VIS Technical Support Team.

Can I have more than one version of ENVI/IDL installed on my machine?

It is possible to have more than one version of the software installed at any given time, and they should not conflict with one another (for example, using ENVI 4.8 and ENVI 5.0 on the same system).

If you are installing a service pack (for example, if you are have installed ENVI 5.0, and would like to upgrade to ENVI 5.0 Service Pack 2), it is recommended to remove the previous version that is being updated on UNIX based systems (Macintosh, Linux, Solaris).  Windows machines will uninstall the same point version prior to installing the service pack as part of the installation process.  It is not necessary to remove older versions that are not being upgraded (e.g. it is not required to remove ENVI 4.8 when installing ENVI 5.0 Service Pack 2).

    Are licenses backwards compatible?

All Exelis VIS product licenses are backwards compatible, with two caveats:

Due to the encryption technology used in ENVI and IDL licenses that are version 4.8/8.0 and above, you must be using lmgrd version 11.6 or greater for server based licenses.  This is installed by default with ENVI 4.8 and above, as well as IDL 8.0 and above.

While licenses are backwards compatible, the default directories that the license manager looks in are different versions, so you will want to make sure that you place a copy of the license file in the default installation directories used by the older versions.  Those locations are listed below:

ENVI 5.0, IDL 8.2 and above:

    Windows - C:\Program Files\exelis\license

    Linux/Solaris - /usr/local/exelis/license

    Macintosh - /Applications/exelis/license

    ENVI 4.3 - 4.5, IDL 6.4 - 7.1:

    Windows: C:\Program Files\itt\license

    Linux/Solaris: /usr/local/itt/license

    Macintosh: /Applications/itt/license

ENVI 4.2 and older, IDL 6.3 and older:

    Windows: C:\RSI\license

    Linux/Solaris: /usr/local/rsi/license

    Macintosh: /Applications/rsi/license

I am a network administrator and need to install a site license. What are my options?

Follow the licensing steps in the above FAQ to retrieve your license from the Exelis website. As a network administrator, you most likely received a floating license, which allows one or more non-specific network machines to concurrently access Exelis software. You can choose how users access the floating licenses, you can reserve licenses for individuals or groups, or you can allow all users to share access to the licenses.

Floating licensing requires you to install a License Manager. The License Wizard provides an option to install a License Manager that will run at boot time. If you already installed an Exelis software product, then you do not need to re-install a License Manager.  If you will not be installing the software on the server machine, you will want to download the Exelis Products License Server available under the downloads section.

More detailed information for working with the License Manager in a network environment is available in the Advanced Topics in Licensing PDF, available on the product installation DVD or with the software download package.

Please see our Platform Support Help Article 4627 for more information.

How can I configure my client machines to check out a floating license?

Client machines can be configured using either the license file that is located on the server machine, or using an environment variable.  For assistance on how to configure the client machine as well as determining which option is best for you, please see "Configuring Client Machines to check out Floating Licenses".

How do I configure my server and client machines to communicate through a firewall?

Communication errors can frequently happen (particularly on Windows operating systems) if any firewall on the server or client machine is not configured properly to allow TCP communication on port 1700 (which the license manager uses by default) as well as the vendor daemon port.  The vendor daemon port is randomly assigned during license manager startup, but can be configured using the techniques mentioned in Help Article 1210.

Where can I find information regarding configuring and managing the license manager on Windows?

For assistance with managing the license manager service on Windows machines, please see Help Article 4358.

How do I manage the license manager on my Macintosh operating system?

Starting in ENVI 4.8 and IDL 8.0, the license manager service on Macintosh operating systems use the /Library/LaunchDaemons directory to launch it as an on-demand service.  This means that the license manager service should start automatically when ENVI or IDL is opened, and the commands "./lmgrd" and "./lmdown" no longer work as they did in previous versions.

Please note as well is that this has changed the way that users will access the license manager debug log on Macintosh systems, with the debug log now being output to the Apple Console.

For more assistance on how to stop and start the license manager service, how to install the license manager service, and accessing the debug log, please see Help Article 4646.

How do I manage the license manager on my UNIX/Linux machine?

For assistance with managing the license manager service on your UNIX/Linux machine, please see Help Article 4409.

Many people get license from the virtue platform, but most of them do not know how does it work! There are some features working on this macine and a lot of intrinsic factors are working behind the curtain. A good understanding knowledge regarding the Exelis help to solve all types of problems.
